Here's where the line sits, and what we regularly find behind walls when it's been crossed.
What the law actually says
In Victoria, virtually all electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician - that includes replacing powerpoints and light switches, installing ceiling fans, and running any new wiring. Beyond the safety risk, unlicensed work can void your home insurance and creates real problems when you sell.
What you can legally do yourself: change light bulbs, plug things in, and reset a tripped breaker. That's about it - and honestly, that's the point.
What we find behind walls
The jobs that generate our most expensive call-outs are almost always repairs of DIY work:
- Powerpoints wired with reversed polarity - working fine, silently dangerous
- Junctions twisted together and taped inside wall cavities with no enclosure
- Undersized cable feeding heaters and ovens, cooking itself inside the wall
- Extensions run off lighting circuits that were never rated for the load
